“Lost in thought” is an introspective journey into the psyche of the artist Maliza Kiasuwa, depicting the organised, yet confused, synaptic connections of her brain. Each work represents a different state of mind, ranging from anxiety to meditation, and ventures into paranormal neurological abilities, such as telepathy. Reminiscent of the automatic drawing technique of the surrealist movement, the 12 works were completed over seven days of frantic work. The coherent series constitutes a major evolution in Kiasuwa’s artistic production, at the crossroads of figurative and abstract art. The artist, however, shows continuity in her technique by drawing on old canvas sails from Lamu’s dhows, the traditional ships of the Northern coast of Kenya, or on Canson Ingres paper. She uses mixed media, such as architect’s ink pens, acrylic paints, and chalk. As the size of Kiasuwa’s works gets larger and larger, so, too, is the maturity and power of her art.
Maliza Kiasuwa is contemporary artist of African and European origins, living in Kenya. She first exhibited her work in Colombia in . Her works include chalk and ink drawings,
acrylic paintings on various media, and collages.
